The doses studied are typically in the 300 to 600 mg per day range of a concentrated root extract.
Two honest caveats keep this from being a magic bullet. First, most trials run in people who are already stressed, so the effect in a calm, well-rested person is likely smaller. Second, some ashwagandha research uses branded extracts and small samples, and independent replication is still catching up to the enthusiasm. Even with those caveats, ashwagandha is the clear front-runner for measurably reducing cortisol. Worth saying plainly: ashwagandha is not in NUUD's formula. Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid found in cell membranes, and it has a specific, narrow claim behind it: dampening the cortisol surge that comes from acute physical stress. In a controlled study, supplementation blunted the endocrine response to moderate-intensity exercise, reducing the cortisol rise that exercise normally produces (Starks et al., 2008). Older work found similar effects on the cortisol response to psychological stress.
Read the claim carefully. The evidence is about softening a stress-triggered spike. It says little about lowering your resting daily cortisol or fixing a wrecked sleep-stress cycle. That makes phosphatidylserine a reasonable tool for people whose stress is exercise-heavy or acutely spiky, and a weaker choice for someone whose issue is a constantly elevated baseline. Study doses cluster around 300 to 600 mg per day. The evidence is real but the lane is narrow.
L-theanine: calm without sedation
L-theanine is the amino acid in green tea that takes the edge off caffeine. It has moderate evidence for reducing the body's stress response. In a controlled trial, L-theanine reduced both psychological and physiological markers of stress, including a smaller stress-related rise in measures tied to the HPA axis, compared with a control condition (Kimura et al., 2007). People describe the feeling as calm and alert at the same time, which is why it pairs well with coffee.
The nuance is that L-theanine works acutely and mildly. It is the kind of thing you take before a stressful stretch to keep the stress response from overshooting, and study doses sit around 200 mg. It is not going to overhaul a chronically dysregulated cortisol curve on its own, and nobody serious claims it does. As a low-risk, same-day calm tool, it earns its place. For months of grind, it is only a small piece of the fix.
Rhodiola, magnesium, and omega-3s: the "reasonable but oversold" tier

Some smaller studies report modest morning-cortisol effects, but the fatigue and wellbeing data are stronger than the raw cortisol data. Grade it as a fair stress-and-energy herb with weak direct cortisol proof.
Magnesium matters most when you are deficient. Low magnesium is associated with higher stress reactivity, and many people do not get enough, so correcting a shortfall can help how you handle stress. The catch is the mechanism: correcting a real shortfall is what helps, while megadosing past an already adequate intake does very little. If your intake is already adequate, more magnesium is unlikely to move your cortisol. It is cheap, safe, and worth getting from food or a modest supplement, with realistic expectations.

What is overhyped: cortisol cocktails and "cortisol face"
A whole genre of content has turned cortisol into a scapegoat for every off day. Three claims deserve a plain reality check.
The viral "cortisol cocktail," a mix of juice, salt, and cream of tartar sold as an adrenal reset, has no clinical evidence that it lowers cortisol. It is flavored electrolyte water. If it helps you drink more fluids in the morning, fine, but it is not doing anything hormonal, and we are not going to hand out a recipe for a hormone fix that does not exist. "Adrenal fatigue" as a diagnosis is not recognized by endocrinology bodies, and true adrenal insufficiency is a serious medical condition that a doctor diagnoses and manages. A morning drink does not.
"Cortisol face," the idea that a puffy morning face is proof of high cortisol, is mostly marketing. Facial puffiness has many ordinary causes: sleep position, salt, alcohol, allergies, and simple fluid shifts overnight. Genuine cortisol-driven facial changes show up in specific medical conditions, and those are diagnosed with lab testing. A glance in the mirror does not qualify. Detox teas and "cortisol detox" protocols round out the overhyped list. Your liver and kidneys handle clearance; a tea does not detox a hormone.
How to actually lower cortisol, in order
Before any capsule, these are the levers with the most leverage. None of them are exciting, and all of them beat a supplement for a chronically elevated baseline.
- Protect sleep first. Short and broken sleep is one of the most reliable ways to keep cortisol elevated. A consistent seven to nine hours does more for your stress hormones than any pill, and it costs nothing.
